Lydia, Honestly

The bit nobody mentions about the injections

I’ll say up front that the injections work. That isn’t in dispute and I’m not here to pretend otherwise.

But there are two things that don’t make it into the advert with the nice music and the woman doing up her jeans.

The first is that as many as one in five people get gastrointestinal problems. Nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhoea. A fifth of everyone, sick.

The second is the one I can’t stop thinking about. Clinical trials have reported that between 35 and 45 percent of the weight lost on these drugs isn’t fat at all. It’s lean mass. Muscle and bone.

I’m forty. I’m a woman. My bones are already having a quiet think about what they’d like to do over the next decade.

This isn’t purism

I’m not against medicine and I’m not telling anyone to come off anything. That’s between you and your doctor.

I’m doing sums. And the sums are why I’m testing the slow way first.
